Plan
Purpose: Control and minimize fire hazards.
Scope: Applies to all employees and all areas of the plant.
Remarks: None.
Definitions: None.
Responsibilities:
- Each employee is to be aware of the fire potential related to the job being performed, such as oils, paints, solvents and sawdust.
- Employees will also observe signs warning of "No Smoking" and/or "No Open Flames" in the areas where such warning signs are posted.
Task Description:
- A list of workplace fire hazards is given below. Each of these items has been identified as flammable or combustible. The information relating to the items is contained on the MSDS for each item.
- Storage of the hazards is as follows:
- Hazardous Chemicals Storage Room - located in the Finishing Building (Building B) for combustible paint and solvents. They are stored in closed metal drums or cans labeled to identify the contents. Paint containers used for production must be covered whenever not in use or unattended.
- Flammable items may be stored in the sprinkle protected areas of the Finishing Building and the Quality Control area of Building D.
- Acetylene tanks and Oxygen tanks are stored separately by the main entrance of the Hot Wound Plant (Building D). The tanks are secured to the wall at all times to prevent them from being accidentally knocked over.
- Waste paper and household type trash is deposited in garbage cans throughout the shop. These are emptied regularly into a container outside. An outside waste contractor empties this container on a weekly basis.
- A quench oil storage tank is located on the north side of the Hot Wound Plant (Building D). There are also three (3) quench tanks located inside of Building D that are used in the manufacturing process. Each of these tanks have self-contained fire extinguishing systems.
- The natural gas mains are located on the west side of Building D and the north side of Building B and also on the south side of Building C. The lines run in the ceiling area through the buildings then drop down to the furnaces and ovens.
- Quality Control has a magnetic particle testing machine located inside of the Inspection Room on the north side of Building D that contains kerosene that carries the magnetic particles used in the inspection process. The liquid is called Double Check MPF, which is manufactured by Sherwin Williams. This machine holds five (5) gallons. A fire extinguisher is located in this room.
- Flammable aerosol paints are contained in flammable lockers in the finishing building, at the shears and in maintenance.
