Pathogens
Purpose: To prevent employees at Duer/Carolina Coil from being exposed to infectious material that are obtained from any resources used to treat an injured employee. Also, to properly disposed of any and all material used in the treatment of an employee.
Scope: Applies to all areas of the company.
Remarks:
- The best person to clean any bodily fluids is the person whose fluids contaminate a work site. This minimizes the risk of exposure of any blood borne pathogens to others.
- Each employee may access the detailed requirements of this program via www.osha.gov 29 CFR Part 1910.1030.
- Bloodborne Pathogen kits are located at the first aid
kits at the wash-up sinks in Hot Wound and Cold Wound.
Definitions: Blood borne pathogens are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). All bodily fluids containing blood should be considered contaminated with blood borne pathogens.
Responsibilities:
- Each employee is responsible to follow the intent of this instruction.
- The senior person in the presence of an injured employee will direct cleaning in accordance with this instruction.
- Production and Maintenance Supervisors and Managers shall be considered to have occupational exposure and their training is documented on F10040.Bloodborne Pathogens Occupational Exposure.
Task Description:
- In the event an injury causes bleeding and there is contamination at the worksite:
- No eating, drinking, smoking, applying lip balm or cosmetics and handling contact lenses in or near the affected areas.
- The site shall be cleaned using CIDEX, other disinfectant or a solution of household bleach, diluted 1/10 with water and with a contact time of not less than ten minutes.
- Any contaminated materials, Band Ads, swabs, etc., shall be placed in a biowaste plastic bag and disposed of according to standard bloodborne pathogens procedures. Any "sharps" such as broken glass, needles or metal fragments that are contaminated shall be cleaning up by mechanical means, not by hand, and placed in a plastic bag and then placed in a carton. A sharps container may also be used.
- Secure the biohazard waste in the Production Manager or Production
Supervisor's office.
- Notify the Purchasing Manager of the amount of biohazard waste and its
location. Duer/Carolina Coil maintains a contract with Stericycle to
handle any biohazard waste. The Purchasing Manager will contact Stericycle
and hold the biohazard waste until Stericycle takes it.
- In the event an employee is exposed to another person’s blood or body fluids while performing a Good Samaritan act or first aid, document the exposure using F10010.Reportable Accident Report. That employee will be offered, but the opportunity to receive:
- Hepatitis B vaccinations
- Medical counseling at the company’s expense.
- If the employee declines the above treatment, the employee must complete F10039.Declination Statement.
- Records of the above completed forms and any medical documents associated shall be kept confidential.
- All employees shall be trained on this work instruction annually and documented on F10035.Safety Orientation.
